CS2’s primary menu is pushing players’ computers to their maximum capacity

CS2 Main Menu Issue – A GPU Struggle

In the realm of Counter-Strike games, optimization is generally considered top-notch. However, an unexpected dilemma has surfaced regarding the main menu in CS2 that has left players scratching their heads and their GPUs gasping for air.

A Reddit post by user u/pentafe on Nov. 19 shed light on this peculiar issue with screenshots showcasing a staggering 100 percent GPU utilization solely from having CS2’s main menu open. It begs the question: why does a seemingly unassuming interface require such excessive graphics resources?

If you’ve spent some time playing CS2, you might have experimented with capping your maximum frames per second (FPS) at either 30 or 60 to alleviate the strain. Many participants in the thread suggested this workaround as well – simply type “fps_max_ui 60” into the console and hit Enter. Interestingly enough, pentafe had already capped it at 120 frames per second.

However, pentafe’s point extended beyond frame rate limitations: “I’ll limit the framerate, but I still think that the main menu should not push my graphics card to its limits when a fully loaded Overpass game with ten players and numerous effects like smoke and grenades doesn’t do so.” Despite facing backlash in downvotes from other players on Reddit, pentafe’s argument carries weight.

Main menus are typically designed to be minimalistic and lightweight in terms of resource consumption. It seems abnormal for a feature like CS2’s main menu to exert such heavy demands on the GPU, especially when compared to the intense graphical requirements of an actual in-game scenario.

While it is possible to mitigate high GPU usage by limiting frame rates through console commands, we must question why this extra step is necessary for CS2 while other modern video games automatically optimize their resource allocation and conserve energy.

Although CS2 undoubtedly has larger issues at hand, such as bugs and cheating problems that require Valve’s attention, pentafe’s observation could be indicative of an optimization error or even an undiscovered bug lurking within the game. These concerns should not be taken lightly if we strive for a seamless gaming experience.
