Martin Dwyer Retires from Racing Due to Knee Injury
Renowned jockey Martin Dwyer, who famously rode Sir Percy to victory in the Derby in 2006, has officially announced his retirement from horse racing. The decision comes after a prolonged struggle with a serious knee injury that ultimately proved insurmountable.
Dwyer’s career came to an abrupt halt in March 2022 when he suffered a torn anterior cruciate ligament in his knee. Despite undergoing multiple surgeries and extensive rehabilitation efforts, the Liverpool-born jockey was unable to achieve sufficient recovery to return to professional riding.
“It’s been tough,” admitted Dwyer during an interview with Racing TV. “I’ve been dealing with this injury for quite some time now, and I’ve given it everything I had. Unfortunately, my surgeon recently informed me that my knee won’t be stable or strong enough for me to continue riding competitively.”
The emotional toll of accepting retirement on someone who still possesses great passion for their sport cannot be overstated. “It’s not easy admitting it,” confessed Dwyer. “I would have loved to go out on my own terms like Frankie (Dettori), perhaps even embark on a world tour. But reality is different; I have no choice but to move forward.”
While coming to terms with the end of his illustrious career may be challenging, Dwyer remains grateful for the support he received throughout his journey: “The pain has been constant, but fortunately, I had excellent care at Oaksey House and incredible people around me.”
During his time as a jockey, Martin Dwyer amassed an impressive record of over 1,500 victories. In addition to winning the prestigious Derby and Oaks races, he also claimed triumphs in notable events such as the King Edward VII Stakes, Great Voltigeur, and Coronation Cup.
Looking ahead to his future, Dwyer acknowledged that adjusting to a new chapter in life will require patience. “I’m slowly returning to some semblance of normality,” he stated. “Although it’s not how I envisioned my career ending, I have no choice but to accept it and focus on what lies ahead.”
