Ed Scragg: Scarlets secure the services of former London Irish lock with eligibility to play for Wales

Former London Irish Lock Ed Scragg Signs with Scarlets

In a surprising move, former London Irish second-row player, Ed Scragg, has officially signed with the Scarlets for the upcoming 2023-24 season. The talented Welsh lock will be joining the squad in pre-season next month.

Scragg, who previously played for Cornish Pirates and Plymouth Albion, is set to become an integral part of a restructured senior academy at the Scarlets. With his skill and potential, he is expected to make significant contributions to the team’s success.

“Ed is a truly remarkable young talent hailing from Wales. We have high hopes for his future development,” expressed Dwayne Peel, head coach of the Scarlets.

A Journey From Argentina to Sydney and Back Home:

Prior to this move, Scragg had represented Wales Under-20s at the Junior World Championships held in Argentina back in 2019. During that tournament, he had the opportunity to play alongside several current Scarlets players including Jac Price, Morgan Jones, Ryan Conbeer, Sam Costelow,Tomi Lewis, and Kelsey Mathias.

A product of Dragons Academy while simultaneously studying sports management at Cardiff Met University, Scraggs’ rugby journey took him on loan spells with both Cornish Pirates as well as Plymouth Albion before eventually finding himself at London Irish in June of 2022.

Despite the unfortunate circumstances surrounding London Irish, who went into administration and are currently suspended from Premiership competition for next season, Scragg managed to make a significant impact during his time there. He played six matches in a successful Premiership Cup campaign that saw the Exiles reach the final.

In March of this year, Scragg embarked on an exciting loan deal down under with Sydney University. Although he thoroughly enjoyed his experience playing in Sydney, he is now looking forward to returning to Wales and joining the prestigious Scarlets club.

    A Grateful Farewell:

“It is with mixed emotions that I bid farewell to my time at London Irish. The circumstances were less than ideal, but I am immensely grateful for the opportunity they gave me. I wish everyone well as they navigate through their next chapter,” expressed Scragg upon leaving London Irish.

The highly talented lock expressed his gratitude towards the Scarlets for providing him with another chance to continue pursuing his professional rugby career back home in Wales. With its rich history and esteemed reputation within Welsh rugby circles, Scraggs’ excitement about linking up with the Scarlets is palpable.
