Edwardstone poised for increase in distance

Silviniaco Conti Chase: Edwardstone’s Next Challenge

Edwardstone, the talented nine-year-old chaser, is eyeing his next test at Kempton in the Silviniaco Conti Chase after an impressive performance defending his title at Sandown’s Tingle Creek on Saturday.

Last season, Edwardstone showcased his brilliance by winning the prestigious Sandown showpiece race. Returning to Esher track for this year’s edition was a true testament of his capabilities.

Facing off against Jonbon once again following their clash in last month’s Shloer Chase at Cheltenham, Edwardstone had a tough task on his hands. Although he fell short once more against Nicky Henderson’s star chaser, he managed to close the gap and put up a commendable fight.

Alan King, Edwardstone’s trainer from Barbury Castle stable immediately dismissed any plans of participating in the three-mile King George VI Chase on Boxing Day but expressed keenness to step up his charge in distance for their upcoming start.

“He ran exceptionally well and has recovered nicely from it,” King commented. “We are likely to consider moving him up to two-and-a-half miles in the new year.”

The Silviniaco Conti Chase at Kempton Park in January presents itself as a possible target for Edwardstone. Despite no final decision being made yet about whether he will participate, King believes that the next race for Edwardstone should be over two-and-a-half miles to better evaluate his future campaign.

Looking ahead to the Cheltenham Festival, it seems that the Queen Mother Champion Chase is shaping up as a thrilling contest between Jonbon and formidable Irish rival El Fabiolo. With this in mind, if Edwardstone can prove his stamina in the meantime, he may find himself being aimed towards the Ryanair Chase as his target at the prestigious event.

“You’ve got Jonbon and that incredible horse from Ireland – you wouldn’t exactly be looking forward to taking on those two,” added King with a hint of caution.
