Exciting Victory for Crambo in the Nail-Biting Long Walk Hurdle

Breathtaking Battle of the Ages in Howden Long Walk Hurdle at Ascot

In a heart-stopping clash, Crambo emerged victorious against Paisley Park to claim the coveted title of Howden Long Walk Hurdle champion at Ascot. Paisley Park had been aiming for a record-equalling fourth victory in this prestigious Grade One race over an extended three miles.

However, it was Crambo, four years his junior and providing trainer Fergal O’Brien with only his second elite-level triumph, who stole the spotlight on that eventful day.

    A Nail-biting Duel Unfolds

The race began with Dashel Drasher leading from the front as usual. With just a few lengths separating all ten runners halfway through, tension filled the air.

As they approached the final stages of the race, it became evident that Paisley Park was positioned closer than usual. Tom Bellamy made a move between hurdles to launch a challenge; however, Jonathan Burke timed his attack perfectly and soared over the last hurdle side by side with Paisley Park.

The crowd held their breath as these two exceptional horses engaged in a fierce battle, neck and neck. It was impossible to predict the outcome until the final strides.

With sheer determination and a short head advantage, Crambo crossed the finish line first at 5-1 odds. This victory marked Fergal O’Brien’s first Grade One win since Poetic Rhythm claimed glory in 2017.

    An Unconquerable Spirit

“He never knows he’s beat,” said O’Brien with delight. “Crambo is still very young, and I can’t believe he has won a Grade One race. Two furlongs out, I had faith that he would prevail.”

O’Brien continued praising Crambo’s unique character: “He’s a bull of a horse; you wouldn’t think much of him at home because he’s so straightforward. Noel Fehily bred him alongside Jared Sullivan, who always takes care of his early training—he did an excellent job.”

    A Winning Partnership

Fergal O’Brien made the difficult decision to choose Jonathan Burke over Connor Brace, Crambo’s regular rider for this momentous race:

“Johnny has been riding in Grade Ones since he was 18 years old,” explained O’Brien confidently defending his choice.

O’Brien also recognized Conor Brace’s significant contribution to Crambo’s development: “Connor has played an instrumental role in shaping this horse over the years.” hesitation .
