Farewell fit for a fairytale as King of Steel triumphs in the Champion Stakes, bidding adieu to Frankie Dettori

King Of Steel Provides Frankie Dettori with Perfect Send-Off at Ascot

Roger Varian’s Derby runner-up, King Of Steel, and legendary jockey Frankie Dettori joined forces for a fairytale success in the Qipco Champion Stakes at Ascot. This momentous occasion marked Dettori’s final ride on British soil before embarking on his new venture in California.

Dettori’s remarkable achievements at Ascot need no introduction. The iconic racecourse has witnessed some of his finest performances throughout his career, including a memorable victory in the King Edward VII Stakes at Royal Ascot earlier this year.

In the highly anticipated British Champions Day feature, King Of Steel started from behind as My Prospero led the field. However, it was up to Dettori to showcase his exceptional riding skills as he guided the son of Wootton Bassett from last position to first place.

With just one furlong remaining, there was still much ground to cover. But true to form, King Of Steel unleashed an incredible burst of stamina when it mattered most. As they crossed the finish line, securing victory for them both, the crowd erupted into rapturous cheers chanting Dettori’s name.

King Of Steel triumphed by three-quarters of a length ahead of Via Sistina, trained by George Boughey. French raider Horizon Dore finished third in this thrilling contest.

Dettori expressed his overwhelming emotions after this historic win: “I’m lost for words; it feels incredibly emotional. I can’t believe what just happened out there; the crowd was absolutely amazing. I gave it my all, and the roar of support I received was simply incredible. Thank you to everyone.

“To win this race is truly fantastic, and it feels like it was meant to be. It’s beyond belief; I’m still trying to process everything. The journey wasn’t easy; we had our struggles early on, but King Of Steel found his rhythm and dug deep when it mattered most.”

Dettori continued reflecting on the race: “The last 100 yards were a battle, but with the unwavering support from the crowd, I knew we could do it. The atmosphere at Ascot today has been unreal – an experience like no other.

“This fairytale ending means so much to me; Ascot has always been my home turf. To say that I am overwhelmed with emotions would be an understatement – these are tears of joy!”
