Fernandez Concludes Rookie Season with Mental Resilience and Confidence in MotoGP Future

Augusto Fernandez Reflects on Challenging MotoGP Season with Tech3

Fernandez, the reigning Moto2 champion, faced a steep learning curve in his debut season in MotoGP. Despite showing glimpses of speed and achieving a fourth-place finish at the French Grand Prix, he had to navigate the unfamiliar KTM bike without the guidance of his injured teammate Pol Espargaro.

The uncertainties surrounding Fernandez’s future in MotoGP added additional pressure as KTM contemplated making room for rising star Pedro Acosta. However, ultimately KTM decided to retain Fernandez for the upcoming season.

Reflecting on his challenging year, Fernandez acknowledged that adapting to the demands of riding a MotoGP bike was mentally taxing but expressed confidence in his abilities moving forward. He stated, “It’s been a tough one mentally… I’ve learned how to be fast with these things and I’m confident for next year to have a strong one.”

Herve Poncharal Highlights Impact of Espargaro’s Absence on Fernandez

Tech3 team boss Herve Poncharal believes that Augusto Fernandez faced even greater challenges due to Pol Espargaro’s absence throughout most of the season. He sympathized with Fernández having to bear constant speculation about his future within the team.

Poncharal described Fernandez as an understated individual who quietly goes about his business without seeking attention or creating controversy. This low-profile approach may have contributed to less media coverage of his accomplishments on the track, despite impressive performances such as finishing ahead of Aleix Espargaro and closely trailing Johann Zarco.

According to Poncharal, media focus often centers around sensational stories rather than recognizing consistent performance. He expressed disappointment in witnessing Fernandez constantly questioned about whether he would retain his seat for the next season while already having a contract in place.

    Fernandez’s Determination Shines Amidst Challenges

Despite the obstacles faced in his rookie MotoGP campaign, Fernandez remains resolute in his pursuit of success. Looking ahead to the upcoming season, he is optimistic about further progress with both himself and KTM as a brand.

The young Spaniard has embraced the learning process required to excel at this premier level of motorcycle racing. While acknowledging that it hasn’t been an easy journey, Fernandez firmly believes that he possesses the necessary skills and speed to compete among MotoGP’s elite riders.
