Henderson remains resilient despite Shishkin’s stroke of bad luck

Shishkin Faces Cruel Blow as Ladbrokes King George VI Chase Takes Unexpected Turn

In a twist of fate, Shishkin’s early struggles seemed to be left behind at Kempton – only for him to encounter another setback during the Ladbrokes King George VI Chase. The talented horse, trained by Nicky Henderson, had previously refused to race on his seasonal debut at Ascot. Despite reports of good form back home, there was still uncertainty surrounding his performance.

Shishkin has always showcased immense talent as a multiple Grade One winner over hurdles and fences. However, since his unforgettable victory against Energumene in the Clarence House Chase at Ascot in January 2022, he has faced both highs and lows. He was discovered to have a rare bone condition after pulling up in the Champion Chase that year and experienced defeat upon his return in the Tingle Creek last season before stepping up in distance.

The horse bounced back with an impressive win at Ascot but settled for second place in the Ryanair Chase before triumphing at Aintree over three miles for the first time. Unfortunately, Shishkin decided not to participate at Ascot last month. During the King George race, after initially needing encouragement from jockey Nico de Boinville early on, Shishkin warmed up and took charge ahead of Frodon after completing one circuit around the track. Approaching the penultimate fence while leading comfortably against Allaho and Bravemansgame; however disaster struck when he stumbled right after the jump, leaving de Boinville with no chance to stay on board.

Surprisingly, it was 12-1 outsider Hewick who claimed an unexpected victory by overtaking Allaho and Bravemansgame. Despite Shishkin’s unfortunate mishap, Henderson remained positive about his performance, stating, “I think they say – ‘that’s racing!’. I was delighted with him until then. He was jumping great and appeared to be enjoying himself without needing any additional equipment.” Addressing future plans for Shishkin, Henderson added that aiming for the Gold Cup seemed like the natural choice given his abilities. De Boinville echoed this sentiment: “He behaved well throughout the race. These things happen in racing; it can be cruel.” Defending champion Bravemansgame finished second but felt hindered by Shishkin’s departure from the race. Trainer Paul Nicholls said, “Harry (Cobden) mentioned he had been benefiting from Shishkin’s lead until that unfortunate incident happened which disrupted their momentum.” Looking ahead to Cheltenham, Nicholls expressed confidence in Bravemansgame’s stamina and preferred ground conditions. The team aims to keep him fresh and prepared for upcoming challenges. While uncertainties remain within horse racing as unpredictable events occur on track; one thing is certain – fans will continue to experience a mix of exhilaration and disappointment as these incredible athletes race towards glory.
