Hewick secures another major victory in the King George VI Chase

Unpredictable Race Sees Hewick Come From Behind to Secure Victory

In an extraordinary turn of events at Kempton Park, the Ladbrokes King George VI Chase witnessed an astonishing triumph by underdog horse Hewick. Purchased for a mere £800, this unlikely champion defied expectations and emerged victorious from last place.

The race began with Shishkin taking the lead early on, followed closely by Frodon. The relentless pace set by these frontrunners seemed insurmountable for Hewick (12-1), who appeared to have no chance of catching up.

As they entered the final stretch, it was still Shishkin who looked unbeatable, with Bravemansgame and Allaho desperately trying to keep up. However, just as victory seemed assured for Shishkin, disaster struck when jockey Nico de Boinville was unseated after a slight slip following a perfect jump over the second-to-last fence.

This unexpected turn left Allaho in front but facing fierce competition from Bravemansgame. Yet amidst all the confusion and uncertainty came an incredible surge from the back – Hewick suddenly burst into contention with breathtaking speed.

Jockey Gavin Sheehan expertly guided his mount through obstacles until reaching the final hurdle where they executed a flawless jump that propelled them ahead. With tremendous determination and sheer willpower, Hewick crossed the finish line one-and-a-half lengths ahead of last year’s victor, Bravemansgame.

Reflecting on the race, Sheehan admitted that under different circumstances, he might have considered calling it quits. He explained that Hewick’s initial reluctance to respond made him question their chances of success. However, his faith in the horse’s stamina paid off as they ultimately proved their critics wrong.

In an interview with ITV Racing, Sheehan revealed Shark Hanlon’s belief in Hewick’s potential despite being one of the smallest horses in the event: “Shark said he’s probably the smallest horse here but he’s got the biggest heart and that perfectly sums him up.”

Hanlon expressed his disbelief at this unexpected victory, emphasizing how challenging it was for Hewick to keep up with a field dominated by stronger contenders. Yet against all odds, they persevered and emerged triumphant.

The winning trainer humorously referenced Ruby Walsh’s critique of Hewick before the race as a lucky charm: “He cost £800 and I was watching a programme in the week and Ruby knocked him and I said ‘we’re flying now’ because every time Ruby knocks him we win!”

Looking ahead to future races, Hanlon acknowledged that Cheltenham is not necessarily ideal for Hewick. However, he left open the possibility of competing in the English National or even targeting an ambitious goal like The Gold Cup – proving once again that anything is possible when it comes to this remarkable horse.
