Highfield Princess team taking a cautious approach before making any hasty choices

Highfield Princess: A Future Still Undecided

A mesmerizing performance in Hong Kong last weekend has left the connections of Highfield Princess contemplating her next move. After a commendable effort, they are keen to “let the dust settle” before making any decisions regarding her future.

Having triumphed three times at Group One level under the tutelage of John Quinn in 2022, Highfield Princess has proven herself as a formidable competitor even at six years old. Notably, she secured victories in the prestigious King George Stakes at Goodwood and the esteemed Prix de l’Abbaye at ParisLongchamp. Moreover, she has consistently delivered fine performances despite facing defeat on several occasions.

In Sunday’s highly anticipated Hong Kong Sprint showdown against local superstar Lucky Sweynesse, Highfield Princess failed to strike a significant blow but certainly did not disgrace herself, finishing sixth and trailing by just four lengths. Trainer John Quinn’s son Sean Quinn expressed his pride in her performance, stating that although it was challenging from their wide draw position, she gave it her all. He acknowledged that being nudged wide on the bend when the winner came up her inside may have cost them a place or two but emphasized that overall, she performed admirably on such an intense stage.

“She kept going and picked up £55,000 for finishing sixth whereas if she’d finished seventh she’d have picked up nothing so she paid for the trip and more.”

Currently still residing in Hong Kong along with trainer John Quinn himself until their return to UK soil, there remains uncertainty surrounding Highfield Princess’ future. The decision to retire her for broodmare duties or continue racing in 2024 has yet to be finalized.

Speaking about the next steps, Sean Quinn added, “She’s still in Hong Kong as we speak, so I think it’s just a case of getting her home, letting the dust settle and keeping her ticking over while assessing how she is doing.”

Reflecting on Highfield Princess’ exceptional achievements throughout this year, which include securing another Group One victory and triumphing in one of Europe’s most lucrative Group Two races at Goodwood, Sean expressed immense satisfaction. Not only has she amassed significant prize money but she has also enhanced her racing resume.

“We can look back on this year very satisfied.”
