Goalkeeper Hugo Lloris Joins Los Angeles FC on Free Transfer

In a surprising move, French goalkeeper Hugo Lloris has made the switch to Major League Soccer side Los Angeles FC from Tottenham Hotspur, completing a free transfer that has left many fans puzzled.

Lloris, who is currently 37 years old and considered one of the most successful goalkeepers of his generation, signed a deal with LAFC that will keep him at the club until the end of the 2024 season. Additionally, there is an option for a further two-year extension in his contract.

The veteran shot-stopper spent an impressive 11 years at Tottenham Hotspur, making 447 appearances during his tenure and solidifying his place as one of their top players. This places him seventh on Spurs’ all-time list.

“Spurs will always hold a special place in my heart and that of my family,” expressed Lloris about leaving his former club. “It has been an immense privilege to be part of this team and serve as your captain for many years. Although this chapter comes to an end now, you will forever be in our hearts.”

John Thorrington, co-president and general manager of LAFC described Lloris as not only one of the most accomplished goalkeepers but also as someone who knows how to win matches consistently.

Lloris originally joined Tottenham back in 2012 after moving from Lyon; he was appointed captain by former boss Mauricio Pochettino in 2015. During his time at the club, he played a vital role in helping Tottenham reach the UEFA Champions League final in 2019.

However, as Lloris entered the final year of his contract this summer, he voiced his desire to seek new challenges and explore different opportunities beyond Spurs. His playing time has been limited this season, with Guglielmo Vicario and Fraser Forster taking precedence over him.

To bid farewell to the fans who have supported him throughout his journey with Tottenham, Lloris will make an appearance on the pitch during half-time of Sunday’s Premier League match against Bournemouth at their home ground, the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
