Ioan Lloyd: The Ambitious Fly-Half from Scarlets aspires to Wear Wales’ Number 10 Shirt

Rugby Union: Ioan Lloyd Dreams of Wearing Wales’ Number 10 Jersey

Scarlets fly-half, Ioan Lloyd, has expressed his ambition to wear the number 10 jersey for Wales, calling it “a dream” opportunity. However, he is aware that the decision is not solely in his hands.

The retirement of Dan Biggar and Gareth Anscombe’s unavailability due to joining a club in Japan has left head coach Warren Gatland with limited options for the upcoming Six Nations tournament in 2024. Scarlets fly-half Sam Costelow was initially favored to start but is currently injured and will not be back until January.

Wales will commence their campaign at home against Scotland on February 3rd. When asked about his aspirations as a Wales fly-half, the determined 22-year-old responded by saying, “That is the dream and what I aim to do but it’s not in my hands. All I can do is play as well as I can and help this Scarlets team. If that comes then that’s the dream.”

Unfortunately for Costelow, he sustained hamstring and shoulder injuries during Wales’ recent victory against Barbarians earlier this month ruling him out until next year.

    Fall Foul of Selection Rules

Jarrod Evans and Joe Hawkins are also ineligible for selection after signing contracts with English clubs Harlequins and Exeter respectively whilst Rhys Patchell will be heading off to New Zealand to play for Highlanders which means they no longer meet the requirements set by Welsh Rugby Union’s 25-cap rule. This rule mandates that players based outside of Wales must have accumulated a minimum of 25 international appearances to represent their country.

Despite the limitations, Callum Sheedy remains an option for Gatland as Wales’ attack coach Alex King keeps a close eye on the Bristol fly-half.

    A Chance to Shine

Lloyd himself has seized this opportunity to showcase his skills both at club and national level in his preferred position as a fly-half. Having recently transferred from Bristol where he played across different positions in the backline, Lloyd has already started the first four league games for Scarlets at number 10 and impressed spectators during their recent home matches in Llanelli.

In their narrow defeat against Lions, Lloyd contributed significantly by kicking 13 points and creating an opening try with an impressive break. He is determined to solidify his standing as a fly-half stating, “I loved my time at Bristol and gained valuable experience playing various positions. However, I am naturally inclined towards being a number 10, so joining Scarlets was necessary for me to pursue my passion.”

    A Rich Legacy

The history associated with the iconic Scarlets number 10 jersey is another factor that enticed him towards this club. The likes of Phil Bennett, Stephen Jones, and Jonathan Davies have all donned this esteemed jersey representing both Wales and British & Irish Lions throughout rugby history.

Fully aware of the responsibility that comes with wearing such a legacy-laden jersey, Lloyd expressed his determination saying,”There is massive rich history in the jersey; I have big boots to fill but hopefully I can do it proud.”

“The opportunity to return home and play for a prestigious club like Scarlets was too good to pass up,” added Lloyd who also mentioned his admiration for Sam Costelow, recognizing him as a great player. Lloyd sees their relationship as healthy competition and an opportunity to learn from each other.
