Iroko enjoys a triumphant start in the world of chasing

Impressive Debut for Cheltenham Festival Hero Iroko in Novices’ Chase

In a stunning display of talent, the JP McManus-owned Iroko made a remarkable debut over fences at Warwick’s Stan Mellor Memorial Novices’ Chase. The horse had previously achieved great success under the training partnership of Oliver Greenall and Josh Guerriero, winning its first three starts last season and securing victory at the Martin Pipe Conditional Jockeys’ Hurdle during the prestigious Cheltenham Festival.

Iroko concluded its previous campaign with an admirable third-place finish in the Grade One Sefton Novices’ Hurdle at Aintree’s Grand National meeting. With high expectations surrounding its reappearance and chasing bow, it entered this year’s race as the 11-10 favorite to taste victory once again. Notably, this race was won by Paul Nicholls-trained Stage Star, who went on to achieve success at subsequent Festivals.

This season witnessed champion trainer Paul Nicholls presenting Golden Son, a highly rated French recruit boasting a rating of 142. Golden Son took charge from the very beginning under jockey Harry Cobden and displayed exemplary jumping skills throughout. However, as they approached the final turn into home stretch, Iroko gracefully surged forward under Jonjo O’Neill Jr.’s guidance. O’Neill Jr., exuding confidence in his ride, barely moved a muscle as his mount effortlessly claimed victory by three-and-a-quarter lengths.

Oliver Greenall expressed sheer delight with Iroko’s performance stating that he jumped impeccably and traveled effortlessly throughout the race. There were concerns about whether he would be outpaced over two-and-a-half miles; however, Jonjo O’Neill Jr.’s feedback indicated otherwise – suggesting that sticking to two-and-a-half miles might be best.

Paddy Power responded to Iroko’s outstanding performance by reducing his odds from 20-1 to an enticing 10-1 for securing another Festival triumph in the Brown Advisory Novices’ Chase at Prestbury Park in March. On the other hand, Coral offered slightly more favorable odds of 14-1.

While Greenall remained hesitant about committing to a specific plan, he did assert that various options would be considered based on ground conditions and trip preferences. He mentioned potential races such as the Henry VIII over two miles if there was soft ground at Sandown, or even going up to three miles for the Kauto Star Novices’ Chase if Kempton on Boxing Day presented good ground. The Dipper over two-and-a-half miles at Cheltenham also emerged as a viable option.

In conclusion, Iroko’s spectacular debut over fences has undoubtedly left racing enthusiasts eagerly anticipating its future endeavors. With its impressive form and versatility across different distances, it is without question that this talented horse will continue to captivate audiences throughout the season.
