Italian FA imposes seven-month ban on Nicolo Fagioli over betting violations

Italian Football: Juventus Midfielder Nicolo Fagioli Banned for Betting Breach

Juventus midfielder, Nicolo Fagioli, has been handed a seven-month ban by the Italian football federation after breaching betting rules. The 22-year-old player received a 12-month ban with five months suspended and was also fined €12,500 (£10,850). Apart from these penalties, he will be required to undergo therapy for his gambling problem.

The FIGC (Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio) stated that Fagioli violated regulations concerning placing bets on football events organized by them as well as UEFA and FIFA. It is alleged that he used multiple identities to gamble on illegal websites.

Furthermore, this disciplinary action follows similar incidents involving other players. Sandro Tonali of Newcastle United and Nicolo Zaniolo who is currently on loan at Aston Villa from Galatasaray were both implicated in an investigation conducted by Italian prosecutors during Italy’s training camp on October 12th. Although the specifics of the investigation have not been revealed by FIGC, it has been reported that it relates to an illegal betting probe.

In addition to his ban and fine, Fagioli must participate in at least ten sessions with amateur sporting organizations and groups assisting gambling addicts in order to share his experiences as part of an agreement reached with the FIGC regarding his punishment.

This recent development adds another name to the list of unavailable midfielders for Juventus. France international Paul Pogba had already been provisionally suspended due to failing a drugs test.

Fagioli made his first-team debut for Juventus in 2021 and later went on loan to Cremonese during the 2021-22 campaign. He played a crucial role in helping the club secure promotion to Serie A before returning to Juventus this season, where he has already made six appearances and provided one assist.
