James Anderson backs Jason Roy’s inclusion in England’s World Cup squad

Opener Jason Roy Should Remain in England’s World Cup Squad – James Anderson

In a surprising turn of events, opener Jason Roy has been touted as an essential member of England’s World Cup squad despite missing the recent series against New Zealand due to back spasms.

The absence of Roy provided an opportunity for Harry Brook to showcase his skills; however, he failed to make a strong case with scores of 25, two and 10.

James Anderson expressed his opinion that if Roy is fit, he should unquestionably be included in the squad. Anderson noted that he witnessed Roy actively participating in warm-ups without any signs of discomfort. The experienced cricketer emphasized that Roy has played a crucial role over the past couple of years and deserves his place.

Roy was initially named in the squad set to defend their title in India later this year. However, speculations arose after Captain Jos Buttler and coach Matthew Mott hinted at potential changes before finalizing the squad next week.

Despite being part of the warm-up ahead of the final game against New Zealand at Lord’s on Friday, Roy was surprisingly excluded from the playing XI. Buttler mentioned that he could potentially feature in the three-match series against Ireland for which a separate 13-man party has been announced.

All-time leading wicket-taker Mark Wood and leg-spinner Adil Rashid are also nursing injuries but are expected to recover in time for the World Cup.

Buttler expressed relief at the delayed announcement of the final squad, stating that it allows them more time to gather information and assess player fitness. The recent series against New Zealand provided valuable insights into player performance, helping the management make informed decisions.

Roy might have an opportunity to prove his fitness in the upcoming match against Ireland at Headingley on Wednesday. Eoin Morgan, former captain and a key figure in England’s victorious 2019 World Cup campaign, emphasized the importance of game-time for Roy to be considered for the tournament.

The emergence of Dawid Malan as a strong opening batsman may also impact Roy’s role if he is deemed fit. Malan’s remarkable century in the fourth ODI against New Zealand showcased his consistency and ability to adapt to different situations.

Captain Buttler acknowledged Malan’s brilliance and versatility, praising him for grabbing every opportunity presented to him so far. With his impressive run-scoring record and ability to open or bat at number three, Malan has become a valuable asset for England heading into the World Cup.
