Jay Jay Reilly’s performance in the Lanzarote Hurdle leaves spectators astounded

Jay Jay Reilly Stuns Kempton with 33-1 Victory in Lanzarote Handicap Hurdle

In a stunning turn of events, Jay Jay Reilly claimed victory at the Coral Lanzarote Handicap Hurdle at Kempton, defying odds of 33-1. The eight-year-old gelding, trained by Dan Skelton, secured an impressive win under the guidance of jockey Tristan Durrell.

Last year’s champion Bridget Andrews guided West Balboa to triumph by a short head. This time around, it was Durrell who took the reins and steered Jay Jay Reilly to lead at the penultimate obstacle. With unwavering determination, they gallantly held on until the finish line.

The race appeared to be closely contested as Nemean Lion posed a significant threat approaching the final flight. However, a sloppy jump proved costly for the 9-2 shot, leaving him unable to recover during the run-in and ultimately finishing one-and-a-quarter lengths behind our surprising victor.

Impose Toi entered as an 11-4 favorite but could only secure a minor placing alongside longshot Good Luck Charm (28-1) who managed to exceed expectations.

Durrell expressed his disbelief and gratitude after his momentous day: “It’s unbelievable. Obviously, it’s been my best day in my career so far.” The jockey had earlier achieved success aboard Flegmatik for trainer Dan Skelton.

“I’ve never ridden a double before especially on such a big day like this – it’s just unreal,” continued Durrell while speaking with Racing TV. He also acknowledged the trust placed in him by Dan Skelton and the horse’s owners, adding, “It’s nice to go out there and win.”

Prior to this victory, Jay Jay Reilly had primarily competed over fences, including a mid-field finish in the December Gold Cup at Cheltenham. Durrell attributed the gelding’s success to his confidence-boosting return to hurdles.

“He was a big price but we believed he had a good chance as he has never felt so well all year,” explained Durrell. “Horses gain confidence when they are back over hurdles.” The jockey expressed his joy for achieving such an unexpected triumph: “It’s always unbelievable when it happens – it’s just brilliant!”
