John Herdman Steps Down as Canada Head Coach, Moves to Toronto FC in MLS

Englishman John Herdman Resigns as Head Coach of Canadian National Football Team

In a surprising turn of events, English coach John Herdman has decided to step down from his position as head coach of the Canadian national men’s football squad. The news comes just months after leading Canada into their first World Cup appearance in over three decades.

Herdman, who had taken on the role in January 2018, successfully guided the team through qualification and brought them to the global stage last year. However, he cited a new challenge and opportunity that awaits him at Major League Soccer (MLS) side Toronto FC.

    New Chapter with Toronto FC

Effective from October 1st, Herdman will assume the role of head coach for Toronto FC. The struggling MLS team currently finds itself at the bottom of the league table and hopes that Herdman’s arrival will bring about positive change.

“It’s the right time for a new challenge,” expressed an excited Herdman about his move to Toronto FC. He further mentioned how he has always aspired to operate within a club environment and is looking forward to this fresh opportunity.

    A Stellar Coaching Career

Prior to coaching the Canadian men’s team, Consett-born Herdman made significant contributions while overseeing Canada’s women’s soccer program. Under his guidance, they achieved remarkable milestones such as winning bronze medals at the 2012 and 2016 Olympics, and a memorable run to the quarter-finals of the 2015 Women’s World Cup on home soil.

Furthermore, Herdman also had a successful stint coaching New Zealand’s women’s national team from 2006 to 2011. His extensive experience in developing teams speaks volumes about his dedication to improving soccer worldwide.

    The Legacy Left Behind

Reflecting on his time with Canadian soccer, Herdman expressed satisfaction with his achievements. “I arrived in Canada in 2011 with the aim of changing the game in our country,” he said. “The goal was always to leave the game in a better place, and I’m confident that goal has been achieved for Canada.”

Whilst leaving behind an impressive legacy for Canada, Herdman’s departure does raise questions about who will lead the team going forward. In light of this development, Mauro Biello will take over as interim manager while they begin their search for a new coach.

    The Future Beckons

With Canada set to co-host the next men’s World Cup along with Mexico and the United States, finding a suitable replacement is crucial for sustaining progress within Canadian football. As fans eagerly await news of their new leader, one thing is certain – John Herdman has left an indelible mark on both Canadian men’s and women’s soccer.
