Karolina Muchova defies medical odds to reach maiden Grand Slam final at French Open 2023

Injury-laden Muchova’s Rise to Glory in a First Grand Slam Final!

A little over a year ago, doctors told Karolina Muchova that her tennis career could be over due to injuries. But she refused to give up and has now achieved her first-ever grand slam final appearance at Roland Garros.

Much like how she had to battle back from multiple injuries – including those affecting her back, abdominals, and ankle – she also fought through tough opponents on court. In an epic three-hour match against world number two Aryna Sabalenka, it was Czech player Muchova who emerged victorious with a score of 7-6 (7-5), 6-7 (5-7), 7-5.

“When I missed the Australian Open last year, and I was in pretty bad shape health-wise, some doctors told me maybe you’ll not do sport anymore,” said an exhilarated but exhausted-looking Muchova after the game.

The World Number one Iga Swiatek will face off against the underdog Czech player in Saturday’s finals. However, stats are surprisingly in favor of ranked 43rd Muchova, who has beaten the Pole once in their previous meeting in Prague in 2019.

Interestingly enough, on five previous occasions she faced players ranked first, second or third in the world, and she’s won every time.

“I don’t think I will be the favorite,” said Muchova with a smile.
“But even today match ball down… it’s great to know that I can compete against top players.”

    Muchova’s Perseverance Despite Injuries

The Czech player says there have been several moments of despair throughout her career, from one injury to another. However, despite all odds stacked against her and doctors telling her otherwise – she persisted.

“It’s ups and downs in life all the time. Now I’m enjoying that I’m on the upper part now.” said an optimistic Karolina after winning semi-finals.

    Karolina On Facing Swiatek

Much like how she fought back from injuries and tough opponents alike, Karolina is ready for anything as she gears up for Saturday’s finals against defending champion World Number One Swiatek.

“Yeah it’s nice (to win before), but still tomorrow is a different day. It just shows me that I can play against them.”

“Even today match ball down…but it’s great to know that I have a chance to win and win big matches.”
