Late Surge by Onesmoothoperator Secures Victory in November Handicap

Brian Ellison’s Onesmoothoperator Triumphs in the Virgin Bet November Handicap

British flat racing witnessed an unexpected twist as Brian Ellison’s Onesmoothoperator secured a fortuitous victory in the Virgin Bet November Handicap. Traditionally held at Doncaster on turf, this year’s edition was forced to relocate to Newcastle’s all-weather synthetic surface due to flooding.

Ellison seized the opportunity and entered his five-year-old charge into the race, opting against a planned run in a novices’ hurdle at Sedgefield. The decision proved wise as Onesmoothoperator, ridden by Ben Robinson, made a clever move along the inside rail during the final furlong.

In an exhilarating battle with Charlie Johnston’s Struth, it was Onesmoothoperator who emerged victorious by a neck, defying odds of 15-2. This marked Ellison’s third win in this prestigious event:

“We weren’t even considering running him until we learned about the switch,” admitted Ellison. “Our original plan was to take him for a novice hurdle at Sedgefield! But fate had other ideas.”

The trainer further explained that although initially purchased for hurdling endeavors, Onesmoothoperator has proven himself adaptable on different surfaces. His preference lies with strong galloping races like today’s event where he can utilize his impeccable jumping ability.

    Future Plans:

While a hurdling career remains likely for Onesmoothoperator, Ellison emphasized the importance of good ground conditions. The horse’s exceptional jumping skills make him a formidable contender in that discipline. However, his only previous hurdle race was held on unsuitable slow-paced ground where he finished second.

“We might give him another try just for a change,” Ellison pondered. “But we need to see what the competition looks like and assess the options available.”
