Lucy Shuker Hungry for Grand Slam Success at Wimbledon

As Lucy Shuker gears up for her 13th appearance at the prestigious All England Club, she is determined to seize her first Grand Slam title in wheelchair tennis. Despite reaching five doubles finals and eight overall in majors, the British number one has yet to etch her name on the winner’s trophy.

“I am still chasing that goal and that dream,” said Shuker. “To triumph in a home Grand Slam would be an incredible milestone.”

The 43-year-old from Bournemouth claimed victory earlier this season at the ITF3 UH Cougar Open, securing her first singles title of the year by defeating American Emmy Kaiser in three exhilarating sets. Additionally, she clinched her inaugural doubles crown alongside Dana Mathewson at the Georgia Open – a momentous feat achieved by toppling number one seeds Kgothatso Montjane and Aniek van Koot in an intense match tie-break.

Although confident about her form heading into Wimbledon, Shuker remains level-headed: “All my experience doesn’t necessarily provide me with extra confidence or nerves,” she told . “My hunger and ability are still intact; it’s just a matter of everything aligning on that day.”

Aware of facing off against world-class opponents at SW19, Shuker acknowledges the challenges lying ahead but is committed to putting in the hard work necessary to position herself as a major contender for glory: “If I don’t achieve it, I can look back on an extraordinary career while continuing to chase my dreams.”

Prior to competing in both singles and doubles events at Wimbledon, Shuker will utilize Eastbourne as a warm-up tournament. Taking advantage of a week off, she plans to make any required adjustments before the wheelchair events kick off at SW19.

“As a team, we are constantly assessing and reassessing my game to identify areas for improvement,” Shuker added excitedly. I recently received my new tennis wheelchair, which is an amazing piece of equipment. I can’t wait to try it out and ensure maximum comfort during Eastbourne and Wimbledon.”

She acknowledges that maneuvering on grass presents substantial difficulties but remains optimistic that even slight modifications in her chair will positively impact her performance: “I’m thrilled about this year’s Wimbledon – playing in a home Grand Slam is every tennis player’s ultimate dream.”
