Lyon seeks relocation of Marseille match following bus incident

Lyon to Appeal Decision on Marseille Match Amid Safety Concerns

In a surprising turn of events, Lyon has announced their decision to appeal against the French League’s (LFP) ruling that they must face Marseille in front of home fans during their upcoming match. The Lyon management has expressed their concerns about safety and the need to protect their players.

The origins of this dispute can be traced back to October 29th when Lyon’s team bus was targeted by aggressive Marseille supporters. The incident resulted in several injuries, including facial wounds sustained by Lyon manager Fabio Grosso and his assistant Raffaele Longo.

Despite these troubling events, the LFP rescheduled the match for December 6th and insisted that fans would be allowed to attend. However, Lyon’s director of football Vincent Ponsot firmly believes that playing on neutral ground is essential for ensuring a safe and fear-free environment for all involved.

Expanding on this point, Ponsot emphasized: “We want our players and staff to be able to focus solely on the game without any apprehension or risks. Our intention is not to seek any sporting punishment as we acknowledge that the actions of Marseille supporters were unrelated to their players.”
