Matilda Picotte makes her mark on Doncaster’s main event

Matilda Picotte Triumphs in Japan Racing Association Sceptre Fillies’ Stakes

In a stunning display of skill and determination, Matilda Picotte emerged victorious in the highly anticipated Japan Racing Association Sceptre Fillies’ Stakes at Doncaster. Despite her previous lackluster performances, this talented filly showcased her true potential in this Group Three contest.

Oisin Murphy expertly guided Kieran Cotter’s charge to an early lead, establishing dominance from the very beginning. With Cachet, last year’s 1000 Guineas winner, closely trailing behind her, Matilda Picotte maintained a steady rhythm on the front.

Cachet began to fade as the race progressed, struggling to keep up with Matilda Picotte’s relentless pace. Sensing victory within reach, Murphy urged his mount forward once again, widening the gap between them and their competitors.

Nigiri made a valiant attempt to challenge Matilda Picotte towards the end of the seven-furlong race distance. However, it was futile against the sheer brilliance of this determined filly. Matilda Picotte crossed the finish line three and three-quarter lengths ahead of Nigiri, with Vetiver securing third place by a mere nose over Cachet.

Cotter expressed his delight at Matilda Picotte’s well-deserved win: “She truly deserved this victory after narrowly missing out in her last outing against Jim Bolger’s Clever And Cool. This time around we had more favorable conditions with a shorter distance and less testing ground.”

Looking ahead to future plans for Matilda Picotte,Cotter mentioned considering both Prix de la Foret and another Group Three event at Newmarket as potential options:

“I believe she has what it takes to excel next year as a serious sprinter, especially with an additional year of experience under her belt. Although she may be headed to the sales at the end of this year, I am confident in her potential.”

George Boughey, trainer of Cachet, shared his optimism despite her fourth-place finish: “Considering it was Cachet’s first race since Royal Ascot last year and on ground that posed uncertainties, I am pleased with her performance. She will undoubtedly improve from this experience.”

Boughey also mentioned the possibility of aiming for The Sun Chariot Stakes for Cachet’s next challenge if she continues to progress well:

“We plan to sell Cachet at the mares’ sale later this year. It is gratifying to see her back on track and showing immense improvement after a long break against tough competitors.”

The Japan Racing Association Sceptre Fillies’ Stakes showcased Matilda Picotte’s undeniable talent and resilience. With promising opportunities lying ahead for both Matilda Picotte and Cachet, these remarkable fillies have left their mark on the racing world.
