Mawj set to target Keeneland instead of Sun Chariot

Mawj skips Sun Chariot for Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup

In a surprising turn of events, Mawj, the 1000 Guineas winner, will not be participating in the Sun Chariot at Newmarket. Instead, trainer Saeed bin Suroor has opted for the Queen Elizabeth II Challenge Cup at Keeneland on October 14.

After careful consideration between these two races, Bin Suroor decided to enter Mawj in the $600,000 contest over a mile and a furlong. This decision comes after Dermot Weld’s filly Tahiyra emerged victorious in the Irish Guineas, Coronation Stakes, and Matron Stakes since Mawj’s last appearance.

“She worked well on Saturday and is currently in good form,” shared Bin Suroor when discussing his plans. “We have chosen to head to Keeneland for the QEII as it serves as an ideal preparation for the Breeders’ Cup. We’ll bring her back in between races.”

The formidable performance of Mawj against Tahiyra during their previous encounter has further boosted confidence within Bin Suroor’s camp. No other horse has managed to achieve this feat yet.

According to Bin Suroor: “American racing should suit her; she is a tough filly who thrives on challenges. The flat track at Keeneland will better accommodate her running style.”

This unexpected change of course certainly adds an element of intrigue to Mawj’s journey towards success.
