McLaren’s Former F1 Factory Transformed into Advanced Composites Facility

McLaren Announces Exciting Plans for New Composites Facility

McLaren recently revealed plans to open a new composites facility that will be housed in its former factory, which was previously used before the team moved to a larger location back in 2003. According to team sources, the facility is set to begin production later this summer and is expected to bring significant savings with it.

    The Benefits of Dedicated Manufacturing

Moving the composites department away from McLaren’s main Technology Centre (MTC) and into its own dedicated factory has several benefits. For one thing, this move will allow McLaren to produce parts for their F1 machines much more quickly than they could before.

In addition, by using state-of-the-art machinery compared to what had been available at MTC, McLaren should also see improvements in efficiency when building new cars. The investments in the manufacturing process are designed specifically with these goals in mind.

    A Forward-Thinking Approach

This announcement comes as part of an ongoing series of major upgrades and improvements across all areas of McLaren’s operations – including their wind tunnel and driving simulator facilities. These changes have been made possible thanks to increased investment across all levels of the company.

    The Heritage Cars Move Out

All these future-oriented moves aside; It seems there may be some nostalgia still present within McLaren’s ranks; however much unexplained! At present most of McLaren’s classic racing car collection is stored near this former factory site where it shares space with spare kit such as garage equipment etc., required during race weekends. When asked about moving out heritage cars Piers Thynne, COO explained:

“[The heritage vehicles] are coming back [to MTC] by year-end and quite rightly will be front-of-house on the boulevard. It’s really important that we have those showcase vehicles around us to always remind everybody that we have a long history.”

Thynne also noted that McLaren’s heritage team was still very much part of the Formula 1 organization and hinted at possible future plans without elaborating further.

The Future is Bright for McLaren

All in all, this move by McLaren seems like a smart, forward-thinking choice designed to save time, increase efficiency, and provide plenty of room for future expansion into new areas such as EVs – perhaps even beyond motorsports altogether?

No matter what happens next, it’s clear that McLaren is positioning itself optimally for whatever comes its way – now and into the future.
