Menuisier’s Winter Aspirations Fueled by Timeless Ambitions

    David Menuisier’s Star Two-Year-Olds Shine in 2023

In the world of horse racing, dreams of big-race glory are often born from unexpected sources. For trainer David Menuisier, a challenging campaign turned around when his star two-year-olds came to the forefront.

The Coombelands string at Menuisier’s stable had been struggling to find winners throughout the height of the Flat season. But as the turf season neared its end in 2023, some promising youngsters emerged and provided a much-needed boost for the Frenchman.

Sunway and Devil’s Point were among those who caught everyone’s attention with their impressive performances. They brought hope and excitement to an otherwise tough year for Menuisier.

“It’s great and we’ve had a bit of a tough time with the older horses,” admitted Menuisier. “Especially with three-year-olds throughout the season, so it’s nice that the two-year-olds have kind of saved us this year.”

After Sunway secured Menuisier his fourth Group One triumph by winning the Criterium International, he continued his success on home soil just five days later. War Chimes won Prix Isonomy while Tamfana claimed victory in Prix Miesque – both prestigious races for crack two-year-old fillies.

A day after their victories, Devil’s Point showcased grit and determination by finishing second to Ancient Wisdom in Doncaster’s Futurity Stakes. Menuisier was thrilled with the performance, considering the circumstances.

“The French race was a good test for him,” explained Menuisier. “It didn’t quite suit him, and the ground wasn’t ideal either. We believed he would show more improvement in the Futurity, and he did.”

Looking ahead to 2024, Menuisier feels optimistic about his chances of Classic success with his talented group of youngsters. Reflecting on their potential, he said: “War Chimes looks like a lovely middle-distance stayer while Tamfana could be literally anything – she’s got speed and should stay a bit.” He also mentioned Sunway and Devil’s Point as contenders for future Classics.

In addition to these promising horses, there are other hidden talents waiting to make their mark next season such as Goodwood Odyssey and Ashariba.

The trainer is excited about what lies ahead but remains cautious: “We don’t want to get too excited too soon, but it is time to reflect and enjoy now. Hopefully things go according to plan so we can get excited again next spring.”
