Newcastle United on the Verge of Securing Signing of Italian Midfielder Sandro Tonali from AC Milan

The Magpies set to seal the deal for Italian midfielder Sandro Tonali

It seems like Newcastle United is on its way to make a major move in the transfer market as they are reportedly closing in on Italy’s midfield sensation, Sandro Tonali from Serie A side AC Milan.

Tonali’s agent Giuseppe Riso confirmed that he will sign a six-year contract with The Magpies and his medical could be completed soon. Although both sides have not agreed upon all the details of the deal yet, it is expected that this transfer could cost up to 80 million euros (£68.5m) including add-ons.

“When such an important offer is received it is difficult to refuse both for the club and the player,” said Riso regarding Tonali’s possible move.

The highly-rated youngster played an instrumental role in helping Milan clinch their first Serie A title since 2011 last season and was also part of their Champions League semi-final run during 2020-21 campaign.

A promising young talent with an impressive track record

Sandro Tonali began his professional career at Brescia before earning himself promotion into Serie A in 2018-19 season. Despite being relegated next year, he caught everyone’s attention by making his debut for Italy national team against Liechtenstein back in October 2019 while playing for Brescia. He joined AC Milan on loan last summer before making a permanent switch ahead of this season where he scored five goals in 36 top-flight appearances as the club won the Italian title.

He scored twice in 34 Serie A matches last season, making twelve Champions League appearances before Milan was knocked out by their fierce rivals Inter Milan in the semi-finals.

Tonali is currently part of Italy’s squad at the Under-21 European Championships and will be hoping to make a huge impact for his country during this tournament.

The verdict

Newcastle United has been active during the ongoing transfer window, and if they can land Tonali’s signature, it would undoubtedly be one of their most significant signings. The Magpies struggled last season and narrowly avoided relegation from Premier League; therefore, adding a player with Tonali’s quality could help them improve drastically next campaign.
