Paris 2024 Affirms Tower Construction for Olympic Surfing Venue in Face of Resistance

The Controversial Aluminum Judging Tower in Tahiti for Paris 2024

Paris 2024 organizers are determined to forge ahead with their plan to erect a new aluminum judging tower in Tahiti, French Polynesia, despite facing opposition from various quarters.

In the face of resistance from the International Surfing Association (ISA), local residents, and surfers alike, the organizers have emphasized that the construction of this tower is imperative for ensuring the seamless conduct of the competition and safeguarding all involved individuals.

Debate Over Teahupo’o’s Prestigious Surf Spot

Teahupo’o stands as one of the esteemed surfing locations globally, hosting World Surf League (WSL) tour events. Typically, wooden structures serve during competitions but are later dismantled.

Olympic planners argue that a nine-ton aluminum tower is indispensable to accommodate up to 40 personnel responsible for judging and broadcasting next year’s event.

Opposition Against ISA Concerns and Proposed Alternatives

The ISA has voiced its dissent regarding the tower’s establishment. Previously expressing apprehensions over coral reef damage caused during initial construction attempts which prompted a pause in building activities.
