Playing for a Cause: Matt Fitzpatrick Determined to Secure PGA Tour Spot for His Brother at Zurich Classic

The Unforgettable Story of the Fitzpatrick Brothers

Let’s take a trip down memory lane to 2013 when a young and talented Alex Fitzpatrick caddied for his older brother Matt at the US Amateur Championship in Brookline. Little did they know that this would be just the beginning of an extraordinary journey.

Matt’s victory at the championship not only secured him an exemption for the following year’s US Open but also marked his emergence as England’s premier golfing talent. Fast forward to present day, and he now has a chance to pay it forward.

This Thursday, the Fitzpatrick brothers will team up for the Zurich Classic of New Orleans – a thrilling PGA Tour event featuring 80 two-player teams battling it out at TPC Louisiana. Not only do they have their sights set on claiming a share of the $2,398,000 winner’s purse but also earning a precious two-year exemption on tour.

While such incentives may not be significant for established players like Matt (currently ranked No. 8 in the world), they could prove life-changing for his younger sibling who is currently forging his path on the Challenge Tour and sits at No.705 in global rankings.

“It would be incredible for him,” said Matt during an interview with CNN Sport’s Don Riddell. “We are well aware of what’s at stake and understand how this opportunity can transform his career.”

A Friendly Sibling Rivalry Fueled by Contrasting Styles

The camaraderie between the Fitzpatrick brothers is undeniable, even when they exchange playful jabs. During the Italian Open in Rome, just a few months after Matt’s dramatic US Open triumph, Alex outperformed him slightly in average driving distance. Of course, this prompted some teasing via text message.

Matt shared the humorous exchange on his Instagram account – displaying his name at the top of the leaderboard with Alex’s tied-18th position highlighted below. Despite their friendly rivalry and differing playing styles – Matt excelling off the tee while Alex possesses exceptional iron play and short game skills – they complement each other well on the golf course.

“Our games are pretty opposite,” explained Matt. “I excel at driving while he shines in iron play and short game areas. We know that our paths may differ due to changes in golf over time, but I hope he can follow my footsteps.”

A Glorious Run for Matt Fitzpatrick

Following a remarkable victory at RBC Heritage last Sunday where he triumphed over three-time major champion Jordan Spieth in a thrilling playoff finish, it’s safe to say that Matt Fitzpatrick has been enjoying an outstanding few years.

Hilton Head holds special significance for the Fitzpatrick family as it has long been a cherished holiday destination for them from Sheffield. Winning on its famed Harbour Town course fulfilled one of Matt’s childhood dreams.

“Moments like these make you wish time travel were real so you could go back and tell your younger self what lies ahead,” reflected an elated Fitzpatrick. “It was always a tournament I wanted to win, so experiencing it was incredibly special.”

Embracing Villain Status against Overwhelming Crowd Support

The icing on the cake during his recent victory at RBC Heritage? The fact that most of the crowd was passionately supporting hometown hero Jordan Spieth, leading to resounding chants of “U-S-A” throughout the decisive playoff holes.

While Spieth gestured for quiet, Fitzpatrick embraced his role as the perceived villain. The contrasting support only amplified the intensity and thrill of victory for him.

    The Journey Continues – Together

As Matt and Alex prepare to team up at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, they are well aware that this tournament could have a profound impact on their careers. While Matt is already established among golf’s elite, he hopes that his younger brother can carve out his own successful path in the ever-evolving world of professional golf.
