In a thrilling sprint finish during stage three of the Vuelta a Espana, defending champion Remco Evenepoel emerged victorious. However, his celebration quickly turned into chaos as he crashed into an overzealous fan just moments after crossing the finish line.

The incident occurred amid challenging weather conditions that had plagued the previous stages of the race. Torrential rain made for slippery roads and resulted in numerous crashes throughout the competition.

“Safety is paramount,” emphasized Evenepoel, expressing his concern about the crash that took place only 50 meters post-finish line. “This is now the third consecutive day we’ve encountered issues.”

Despite sustaining a bleeding cut above his right eye from the collision, Evenepoel was able to secure not only the stage win but also claim the red jersey for leading overall. His exceptional performance involved conquering Barcelona’s departure through Pyrenees mountains before reaching Andorra for an intense summit finale.

The Belgian rider showed remarkable dominance as he crossed the finishing line one second ahead of two-time Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard from Denmark. Juan Ayuso secured third place, while Primoz Roglic finished fourth.
