Restriction on F1 circuit access imposed by Australian Grand Prix organizers following issues in 2023

Intriguing Turn of Events at Melbourne Grand Prix!

Last season’s Albert Park race witnessed a truly chaotic affair with not one, but four red flags disrupting the proceedings. The aftermath revealed a shocking breach of FIA security protocols by race organisers, as fans managed to invade the track while cars were still in motion.

Aside from the obvious safety implications and imminent danger of being hit by racing vehicles, these daring spectators even reached the stranded Haas car piloted by Nico Hulkenberg. Positioned at Turn 2 exit after securing seventh place in the race, Hulkenberg’s vehicle had its flashing red warning light activated – an unmistakable indication that it was unsafe due to potential electrical discharge.

Race stewards swiftly declared that “the security measures and protocols which were expected to be in place for the event were not enforced,” resulting in an incredibly hazardous environment for everyone involved: spectators, drivers, and race officials alike.

This alarming incident wasn’t isolated either; similar problems plagued the 2017 Melbourne event when fans also invaded the track. Consequently, this matter warranted scrutiny from FIA’s World Motor Sport Council.

While discussions between organisers and FIA are ongoing regarding this issue, a decision has been made to implement a strict ban on any fan access to the circuit following this year’s grand prix. This marks a significant departure from tradition where enthusiastic Melbourne fans would rush onto the track just in time to join podium celebrations.

No Track Access After Australian Grand Prix 2024

In an official statement released by the Australian Grand Prix Corporation, it has been confirmed that fans will not be allowed on the track at all for this year’s race. However, no decision has been reached regarding whether this ban is a permanent change or subject to future reconsideration.

The statement reads as follows: “The Australian Grand Prix Corporation advises that given the ongoing FIA investigation into the early track breach at the conclusion of the 2023 event, there will be no track access for patrons following the Formula 1 Rolex Australian Grand Prix 2024. Decisions regarding patron access to the track at the conclusion of future races will be made at a later date.”

Interestingly enough, similar incidents occurred in Brazil when fans broke onto Turn 1 of their circuit as cars crossed the finish line. Consequently, race organisers in Brazil have also been tasked with devising an action plan that satisfies FIA requirements ahead of their upcoming race.
