Review: Paddington Impresses with Class in the Sussex Stakes at Goodwood

Paddington Makes it Six Wins in a Row with Commanding Performance at Goodwood

Paddington delivered another sensational performance, extending his unbeaten streak to six victories for the season in the highly anticipated Qatar Sussex Stakes held at Goodwood. The talented three-year-old colt, sired by Siyouni, has been unstoppable since his successful debut in a handicap race at Leopardstown.

With each race, Paddington has continued to impress, triumphing over strong competition. After securing wins in a Listed race at the Curragh and the prestigious Irish 2,000 Guineas, he proved his versatility by comfortably winning over 10 furlongs in the Coral-Eclipse.

This time around, dropping back to a mile did not hinder Paddington’s dominance on the track. Trained by Aidan O’Brien and expertly ridden by Ryan Moore, this resilient colt was favored as the frontrunner with odds of 4-9 despite challenging ground conditions.

The first contender to challenge Paddington’s lead was Inspiral, an accomplished filly with multiple Group One victories under her belt. However, her efforts were short-lived as she struggled to keep up with Paddington’s blistering pace. Another threat came from Facteur Cheval hailing from France but even he couldn’t catch up with Paddington who maintained control throughout.

In an impressive display of strength and speed combined with tactical brilliance on Moore’s part as jockey of choice for this remarkable horse – fact is that nobody could get close enough! With one and a half lengths separating him from Facteur Cheval at the finish line, Paddington solidified his status as the winner.

Paddington joins the ranks of Ballydoyle’s legendary Giant’s Causeway as he becomes only the second horse to complete the triumphant St James’s Palace, Coral-Eclipse, and Sussex Stakes treble. The iconic Giant’s Causeway accomplished this feat 23 years ago before going on to secure victory in the Juddmonte International at York.

    “He’s a Very Special Horse” – Aidan O’Brien

Aidan O’Brien couldn’t contain his excitement about Paddington’s exceptional performance. He commented, “He’s a very special horse. We were concerned about the ground conditions even though he has previously won on similar surfaces; however, today’s race was of a different caliber.”

O’Brien praised Moore for his strategic approach and shared their luck in having such an extraordinary talent within their stables. He further added, “I’m so delighted for everyone involved with him. This horse is truly unique! We will defer to our owners’ decisions regarding future races but know that we are privileged to have such an incredible champion.”

    Next Stop: Knavesmire!

It is highly likely that Paddington will be making his next appearance at Knavesmire on August 23rd. O’Brien expressed confidence in this special colt and said,”We believe he has many options ahead of him considering how remarkable he is! Whether it be York or any other racecourse – nothing can diminish our enthusiasm for this incredible talent!”

    Ryan Moore Echoes Praise

Ryan Moore echoed O’Brien’s sentiments while praising Paddington’s amazing abilities: “It doesn’t matter whether it’s good ground or heavy ground; eight furlongs or ten furlongs – Paddington is a one-of-a-kind horse. Some may say he has taken us by surprise, but I can assure you that his exceptional talent was evident throughout this year. He can handle any challenge thrown at him with ease and finesse.”

Thrilled Owners Revel in the Glory

Peter Brant and Stephanie Seymour were overjoyed to witness their incredible colt’s triumph at Glorious Goodwood. Brant, an esteemed American industrialist and art collector, expressed his pride as an owner: “I am truly honored to be here at Glorious Goodwood. Having been involved in horseracing since 1976, I have seen my fair share of great horses.

This unique horse holds a special place among them all! The name ‘Paddington’ was meticulously chosen by Mrs. Sue Magnier – renowned for her ability to select superb names for our champions. Today marks another milestone achievement for me as an owner; however, Paddington surpasses everything I could ever have imagined.”

Brant reminisced about past successes like Swale winning the Kentucky Derby in 1984 but emphasized how exceptionally proud he feels to own this extraordinary colt.
