Sangster Sets Sights on Guineas Triumph with Shuwari

Shuwari Aims for Qipco 1000 Guineas Glory

In an exciting turn of events, Ollie Sangster has discovered a potential Classic contender in his debut season as a trainer. Shuwari, the talented daughter of New Bay, has emerged as the standout performer amongst Sangster’s Manton-based string.

The promising filly capped off her impressive juvenile campaign by finishing second to Aidan O’Brien’s Ylang Ylang in the Fillies’ Mile at Newmarket. Although she couldn’t outlast the winner in the closing stages of that Group One event, Sangster was thrilled with Shuwari’s performance and is eagerly looking ahead to next year.

“To have a horse contesting a Group One and finishing second is something I could only dream of,” stated an elated Sangster. “While we wanted to win, it’s still incredible to come so close. She ran fantastically well and gives us plenty to be excited about for next season.”

Aiming for Mile Success at The Rowley Mile

Sangster envisions Shuwari as a miler and believes she possesses great potential in that distance category. He suspects that the eventual winner of their previous encounter may excel over longer distances.

“In those final yards, Shuwari just got outstayed,” acknowledged Sangster thoughtfully. “But having a horse like this is what dreams are made of any year – it’s particularly special for one to come along in my first season as a trainer.”

The Road to the 1000 Guineas

A return to Newmarket for the prestigious Qipco 1000 Guineas is now firmly on Shuwari’s agenda. As Sangster had the honor of fielding his first runner in a Group One race with her, it seems likely that she will also become his first contender at one of racing’s crown jewel events next spring.

While plans are still being finalized, if an early-season tune-up is required, Shuwari may make an appearance at Newbury’s Fred Darling. Being their local track and having prior course experience makes it a favorable option. However, they might also opt to send her directly to Newmarket without any preparatory races.

Per Contra Shows Promise Despite Fifth Place Finish

Sangster remains optimistic about Per Contra’s future despite finishing fifth when stepping up in class for the Autumn Stakes. The young colt showcased potential with two impressive victories in minor events before taking on more challenging competition.

“Although it was a big step up in class and a different tempo than what he was used to, I thought he ran a decent race,” explained Sangster. “It was essentially his first proper race since his previous wins were fairly straightforward affairs. He’ll learn from this and hopefully perform even better next season.”

Sangster believes Per Contra is suited for distances ranging from a mile to a mile and a quarter due to his size and physicality. With time on his side during winter training, Per Contra has great prospects going into his three-year-old campaign.
