Scottish Rugby acknowledges their failure in supporting the family of a former player, Siobhan Cattigan

Scottish Rugby Apologizes for Handling of Siobhan Cattigan’s Case

In a shocking turn of events, Scottish Rugby has issued a heartfelt apology and acknowledged their failure to support former international player Siobhan Cattigan and her family adequately. Regrettably, undetected rugby-related brain damage led to the untimely demise of the talented athlete at just 26 years old.

The late back row had suffered two concussions while on duty with Scotland, sparking concerns from her grieving family about the lack of an independent inquiry into the circumstances surrounding her tragic death. These concerns prompted legal action against both Scottish Rugby and World Rugby.

During Saturday’s annual general meeting, newly-appointed chairman John McGuigan expressed remorse over how they handled certain aspects related to Siobhan’s funeral. It was revealed that team-mates were kept in the dark regarding the wishes of the family to have them present during this difficult time. Additionally, Scottish Rugby failed to offer direct condolences or contact the family personally after learning about their devastating loss.

Humbled by recent meetings with Cattigan’s parents and partner, McGuigan publicly apologized on behalf of Scottish Rugby:

“Having closely listened to the heart-wrenching experiences shared by Siobhan’s loved ones, I sincerely apologize for any distress caused during her association with our organization and following her passing,” he stated earnestly.

“While it was never our intention to inflict pain upon the family through our actions, it is crystal clear that we could have managed this tragic situation far more effectively. We have heeded the lessons and are committed to making necessary changes, in honor of Siobhan’s memory, to transform ourselves into a better organization for the future.”

The admission by Scottish Rugby comes as a ray of hope amid the grief surrounding Siobhan Cattigan’s death. It serves as an acknowledgment of their shortcomings and a resolution to learn from past mistakes.
