Shark Hanlon Contemplating Strategies for Hewick’s Future

John ‘Shark’ Hanlon Aims for Gold Cup Redemption with Hewick

Trainer John ‘Shark’ Hanlon is eager to give his talented chaser, Hewick, another shot at the prestigious Cheltenham Gold Cup. After an impressive rise through the ranks in recent seasons, Hewick has established himself as a serious Grade One contender.

Hanlon famously bought Hewick for a mere €850, and the horse has exceeded all expectations since then. Starting off as a useful staying handicap chaser, he has now proven himself capable of competing at the highest level.

The 2022-23 season was particularly fruitful for Hewick. He kicked off with victory in the Galway Plate and followed it up with a stunning triumph in the American Grand National at Far Hills. Unfortunately, his Gold Cup dreams were cut short when he fell two fences from home while still well positioned.

To make amends for that disappointment, Hewicks’ connections secured big-race compensation by winning the Grade Two Oaksey Chase at Sandown Racecourse. They also decided to test him against top-class hurdlers by entering him in the Grande Course de Haies d’Auteuil.

Currently taking a break at Hanlon’s County Carlow base after an unsuccessful attempt to defend his Galway Plate crown, decisions have to be made regarding future plans for this eight-year-old gelding.

“We might go back to America with him,” said Hanlon contemplating their options. “But if not then I will just train him specifically for a Gold Cup.”

Reflecting on last year’s run in the race where he fell before reaching full potential, Hanlon emphasizes that Hewick was never fully trained or prepared for such an intense challenge. However, his performance until the fall was remarkable as he led the pack into the straight.

The ground conditions played a significant role in Hewick’s Gold Cup attempt last year. The soft ground at Cheltenham did not suit him well, and Hanlon believes that with better track conditions, their chances of success would greatly improve.

“He was running a cracker last year, and the ground was the softest it has been in Cheltenham in years,” Hanlon reflects. “The better the ground for us, the better the horse can perform.”

As they finalize their plans for this season, options such as another trip to America or tailoring Hewick’s campaign specifically for a Gold Cup bid are being considered.

Hanlon states: “We have to make up our minds one way or another – do we want to go to Leopardstown at Christmas or February and aim for a Gold Cup? Or do we go back to America? If we choose America, then pursuing a Gold Cup will be unlikely.”

Ultimately, Hanlon expresses his desire to give Hewick another opportunity in pursuit of Gold Cup glory. With a horse of this caliber under his tutelage, winning such an esteemed race is undoubtedly every trainer’s dream come true.
