Spanish Prosecutor Seeks Lengthy Prison Sentence for Former Brazilian and Barcelona Defender, Dani Alves

Spanish Prosecutor Seeks Prison Term for Dani Alves

A Spanish prosecutor is pushing for a prison term of nine years for former Brazil and Barcelona defender, Dani Alves. The 40-year-old footballer is set to stand trial in Spain over allegations of sexual assault that occurred last December.

Dani Alves has been held in custody without bail since his arrest in January after being accused of assaulting a woman at a nightclub in Barcelona. Initially denying any sexual encounter with her, he later admitted to having consensual sex with the accuser.

The prosecutor is also requesting that, following the jail term, Alves be subjected to a restraining order and ordered to pay damages amounting to 150,000 euros (£130,500) to the woman involved.

In August, an official court indictment was issued against Dani Alves in the Barcelona area. After carefully reviewing the evidence available, it was determined that there was sufficient proof to proceed with a trial.

No specific date has been scheduled yet for the trial proceedings involving Alves. It should be noted that he represented Brazil during last year’s World Cup but had his contract terminated by Mexican club UNAM following his arrest.

In Spain, rape allegations are investigated under general accusations of sexual assault. If convicted, sentences can range between four and 15 years imprisonment.
