The Clash of Titans at Rugby World Cup 2023 Final: New Zealand’s Formidable Team versus South Africa’s Powerful Lineup

Rugby Union: All Blacks Must Give it Hell to Overcome South Africa’s ‘Bomb Squad’ in World Cup Final

Flanker Dalton Papali’i believes that New Zealand must bring their A-game to overcome the challenge posed by South Africa and their formidable ‘Bomb Squad’ of replacements in the upcoming Rugby World Cup final.

In the semi-final against England, the Springboks were struggling until their bench, affectionately nicknamed the Bomb Squad, turned things around and helped secure a narrow 16-15 victory.

Papali’i recognizes the reputation of South Africa’s bench but emphasizes that the All Blacks have their own trump card with what he calls “Easy Company”. He remarked, “Talking about the Bomb Squad, they’ve proven themselves. They can come on and change the game just like that. Whoever is on our [New Zealand] bench needs to be mentally prepared and ready to give them hell.”

The 26-year-old flanker replaced All Blacks skipper Sam Cane in both knockout stage wins against Ireland and Argentina. Explaining his reference to Easy Company, Papali’i reveals that he and his teammates have been watching television series Band of Brothers which portrays activities of US Army’s legendary unit during World War Two.

“I made a little joke,” said Papali’i with a smile. “You know they’ve got their Bomb Squad, so we can have our own ‘Easy Company’. We want to go out there and finish the job, just like soldiers in the trenches.”

New Zealand entered the Rugby World Cup ranked fourth in the world following a humbling defeat to South Africa in their final warm-up game at Twickenham. Despite an initial setback against hosts France on opening night, they have defied expectations and won every subsequent match, earning themselves a place in a record fifth World Cup final where they will face off against their rivals from South Africa.

Both teams are vying for a historic fourth title. Papali’i highlights the significance of this moment by sharing that senior players within the All Blacks addressed the squad on Monday, delivering emotional speeches that touched everyone present.

“It was truly something special when you hear those boys open up,” Papali’i said with admiration. “These leaders have experienced countless highs and lows throughout their careers, both on and off-field. When they reveal their vulnerability, it makes us all feel welcomed and fuels our desire to give everything we’ve got for them.”

Papali’i continues by expressing his appreciation for witnessing tears shed during these heartfelt moments. He believes it is admirable to see players showing vulnerability and openly discussing how much this tour and game mean to them.

“Some say this is one of the most important games in All Blacks history,” he reveals. “We faced criticism from media, friends, family – doubters who didn’t even expect us to make it to the final. But here we are! Different players react differently, but seeing our older players emotionally affected inspires each one of us to dig deep and give absolutely everything.”
