The crucial figure in Ducati MotoGP taking a step back when they may require his expertise the most

Ducati Announces Major Shake-Up in Sporting Leadership

In a surprising move, Ducati has recently unveiled significant changes to its sporting leadership. Paolo Ciabatti, the former sporting director of Reparto Corse – the racing arm of the brand, will now assume the role of general manager for their new off-road structure. Stepping into his shoes as sporting director is Mauro Grassilli, who previously oversaw marketing and sponsorship.

The significance behind these moves lies in Ciabatti’s change of reporting hierarchy. Instead of answering directly to Dall’Igna, global general manager of Ducati Motor Holding S.p.A., he will now report directly to Claudio Domenicali, CEO of the company. This transition further solidifies Dall’Igna’s influence within Ducati and expands his responsibilities beyond just technical aspects.

One notable aspect about Ciabatti’s departure is its timing coinciding with Marc Marquez joining Gresini Racing Team (formerly Aprilia) under Ducati management. Ciabatti has been instrumental in effectively managing rider contracts at Ducati while maintaining positive relationships and resolving conflicts through dialogue.

“Paolo has always been very easy to work with… He never lost his temper,” says Jorge Lorenzo, former Ducati rider who had a close relationship with Ciabatti during his time with the team.

“Starting this off-road project… With the departure of Paolo, MotoGP division loses a lot but motocross division gains a key player,” shared Jorge Lorenzo, who recognizes the impact of Ciabatti’s transition to the off-road sector.

Ciabatti has played a vital role in maintaining harmony within Ducati’s rider line-up and acting as a bridge between riders and the brand. His absence may pose challenges for Grassilli, especially when negotiating with prominent riders such as Francesco Bagnaia or Jorge Martin.

“Mauro is very good… but we will have to give him time to see if he can develop that human side. As for sponsors, he has learned a lot from Paolo,” remarks Albert Valera, sports agent representing both Lorenzo and Martin.

“One of the main issues to be dealt with by the new executive will be how Marquez will fit in… considering the initial hesitation among other Italian riders towards him,” said an industry insider.

This unexpected shake-up raises questions about Ducati’s decision-making process going forward. The challenge lies in integrating Marquez into their team successfully while addressing any reservations from existing riders. Only time will tell how this change in leadership ultimately impacts Ducati’s performance on and off-track.
