The Perspective of Connections During an Eclipse

    Paddington Targets Coral-Eclipse at Sandown

Trainer Aidan O’Brien has decided to divert from the original plan and target his dual Group One-winning colt, Paddington, at the prestigious Coral-Eclipse race in Sandown on Saturday. This unexpected change is a reflection of Paddington’s exceptional well-being and unbeaten record this season.

Paddington has been unstoppable, winning all four starts without facing any significant challenges so far. His impressive victories in the Irish 2,000 Guineas and St James’s Palace at Royal Ascot have proven his ability to compete at the highest level.

O’Brien initially hinted that he might save Paddington for Goodwood’s Sussex Stakes; however, he now believes that stepping up to 10 furlongs and taking on older horses will provide valuable experience for the talented colt.

“Everything has gone well since Ascot,” said O’Brien. “He looks fresh and continues to progress with each race.”

    Unconcerned About Distance and Competition

The trainer does not anticipate any issues with regards to distance or competition. O’Brien expressed confidence in Paddington’s pedigree suitability for a mile and quarter trip as suggested by John Magnier. Jockey Ryan Moore also shares this belief.

O’Brien emphasized that Paddington is a straightforward horse who can adapt to various racing strategies based on jockey instructions. The small field size does not concern him either, as he considers all participants strong contenders.

Main Rivals: Emily Upjohn and Dubai Honour

Emily Upjohn is among those vying for victory alongside Paddington. Despite having to concede weight and a higher rating, connections of the John and Thady Gosden-trained filly are hopeful that her second Group One victory in the Coronation Cup at Epsom will boost her chances.

Meanwhile, William Haggas is excited to see Dubai Honour return to home turf after a successful winter campaign abroad. Although acknowledging the tough competition posed by Paddington and Emily Upjohn, Haggas admires Dubai Honour’s achievements and appreciates his remarkable consistency.

Select Field Completed By West Wind Blows

The small but select field is completed by Simon and Ed Crisford’s West Wind Blows. As a dual Group Three winner who performed admirably in the Hardwicke Stakes finishing behind Hukum, this four-year-old should not be underestimated despite being considered an outsider.

In conclusion, all eyes will be on Sandown this Saturday as Paddington takes on older rivals at 10 furlongs for the first time. The Coral-Eclipse promises thrilling competition as talented contenders vie for glory in this prestigious race.
