Tonga Includes Suspended Center George Moala in Rugby World Cup 2023 Team

Tonga Include George Moala in World Cup Squad Despite Ban

In a surprising move, Tonga has selected former New Zealand centre George Moala for their World Cup squad, despite him serving a five-game ban. The 32-year-old was sent off for a dangerous tackle during one of the warm-up matches against Canada earlier this month.

Moala missed the second Canada match and two club games due to his suspension. As a result, he will sit out Tonga’s Pool B fixtures against Ireland and Scotland in France. However, he will be eligible to face defending champions South Africa on October 1st.

The Tongan squad also includes former All Blacks Charles Piutau, Vaea Fifita, Malakai Fekitoa, and Augustine Pulu. Notably absent from the lineup are ex-Wallabies wing Israel Folau and back Telusa Veainu due to injuries.

World Rugby’s three-year stand-down period allows capped players to switch allegiances, making it possible for these notable selections by Tonga.

“It’s a squad I’m very proud to coach,” said Toutai Kefu, head coach of Tonga and former Australia international player. “I know all the players are looking forward to representing their families and all Tongans around the globe with pride.”

Tonga still has an opportunity to add another player to their squad as teams are allowed up to 33 players in total. The upcoming World Cup is set to take place from September 8th until October 28th.
