A shocking and tragic incident took place before the recent match between Nantes and Nice in the French Ligue 1. A fan of Nantes lost his life after being stabbed amidst clashes between opposing fans.

The unfortunate event occurred when a group of vehicles carrying visiting Nice supporters was attacked by hostile Nantes fans en route to the Beaujoire stadium prior to Saturday’s game. Public prosecutor Renaud Gaudeul confirmed that a 31-year-old man was fatally wounded.

The victim sustained a serious back injury, possibly inflicted by a bladed weapon. As a result, an investigation into “voluntary manslaughter” has been initiated, leading to the detainment of a 35-year-old driver involved in one of the vehicles.

“Numerous witness interviews are currently underway and will continue throughout the night,” stated Nantes in an official statement. They expressed their sorrow over this tragic loss and extended their heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased individual. The club also lamented such circumstances resulting in someone losing their life.

French sports minister Amelie Oudea-Castera emphasized that it is crucial for investigators to ascertain all pertinent details surrounding these events, ensuring that justice is served accordingly.
