Tragic Loss Shakes Horse Racing Community: Cody Dorman’s Demise Leaves an Impact

Cody Dorman: The Inspirational Journey of a True Racing Fan

In a heartbreaking turn of events, the racing community mourns the loss of Cody Dorman, an extraordinary individual who shared an unbreakable bond with dual Breeders’ Cup champion Cody’s Wish. Cody, who was born with Wolf-Hirschhorn syndrome, a rare genetic condition that limited his ability to speak and confined him to a wheelchair, played an integral role in the incredible journey of Bill Mott’s talented five-year-old.

It all began when the Dorman family paid a visit to Gainsborough Farm Stud. It was there that young Cody encountered the curious foal destined for greatness – later named Cody’s Wish. In what would become an unforgettable moment, this gentle creature approached Cody’s wheelchair and placed its head on his lap. From that instant forward, their connection grew stronger.

This unique relationship endured throughout Cody’s Wish’s entire racing career under Godolphin ownership; however, tragedy struck as they were returning home from Santa Anita following one final triumphant Dirt Mile victory at the Breeders’ Cup.

A statement released by Kelly and Leslie Dorman expressed their profound sorrow: “We are heartbroken to share the news that our beloved son suffered a medical event during our trip home to Kentucky and has passed away.”

Last Saturday marked yet another awe-inspiring win for both friends – as always demonstrating unwavering perseverance and toughness. These same qualities were mirrored in young Cody throughout his remarkable 18 years among us.

The impact brought about by this unlikely duo has been nothing short of astonishing – capturing hearts across racetracks such as Churchill Downs, Keeneland, Saratoga, and most recently Santa Anita during this memorable weekend. Their story has resonated deeply within so many individuals lucky enough to witness it.

The Dorman family added, “Cody’s diagnosis at birth prepared us for this inevitable day; however, we were determined to provide him with the best life possible for as long as we had him. Anyone who has seen Cody on the racetrack, especially around Cody’s Wish, understands that he taught us all how to truly live – maintaining a positive attitude and caring more about others than himself.”

As people of faith, they find solace in knowing that Cody has returned home. Their prayers are focused on his continued presence among their loved ones and particularly his little sister Kylie – whom they regard as the best sister anyone could ask for.

The Dormans express heartfelt gratitude towards those who have joined them on this extraordinary journey: “The joy brought to Cody through his interactions with Cody’s Wish over these past five years is indescribable. These cherished memories will guide us during this unimaginably difficult time.”

    A Tribute from Breeders’ Cup

In addition to the outpouring support from countless individuals touched by their story, the Breeders’ Cup organization also paid tribute to young Cody’s memory:

“The entire Breeders’ Cup team is devastated by yesterday’s news of Cody Dorman’s passing. His incredible journey captured our hearts and minds – exemplifying strength, spirit, and determination just like his namesake did throughout every commanding performance.

We extend our sincere condolences to the Dormans for sharing their remarkable family with our sport – inviting us into their lives and allowing us all to learn from them.”
