    Trainer Insights: Cheltenham Friday Preview

Minella Indo Faces New Challenge in Cross Country Handicap Chase

The Cheltenham Gold Cup hero, Minella Indo, is set to face a new challenge in the Glenfarclas Crystal Cup Cross Country Handicap Chase at Prestbury Park. This race holds special significance for Minella Indo as it was here that he achieved his finest hour by winning the blue riband event and providing trainer Henry de Bromhead with his first victory.

Minella Indo has had great success at Cheltenham, not only winning the Gold Cup but also claiming victory in the Albert Bartlett and finishing second in the RSA Novices’ Chase. While he has shown glimpses of brilliance since his Gold Cup triumph, his form has been inconsistent recently. Following a disappointing performance at Down Royal, connections have decided to switch things up and try him out in the cross country discipline.

This move is not unprecedented, as other top-class horses have successfully made the transition to cross country racing. Trainer Henry de Bromhead has expressed confidence in Minella Indo’s ability to adapt to this different style of racing after impressive schooling sessions over cross-country obstacles.

Jockey Rachael Blackmore echoed this sentiment and emphasized that while it will be Minella Indo’s first time competing in a cross-country race, he has already shown promise during training sessions on similar courses. Despite carrying top weight due to being a previous Gold Cup winner, hopes are high for a strong performance from Minella

Gordon Elliott Aims for Cross Country Success

Gordon Elliott is synonymous with success at Cheltenham Festival’s cross country events and boasts an impressive track record in this discipline. However, recent outings with Tiger Roll and Delta Work proved less fruitful than expected. Galvin finished out of money when favored during November meeting but aims for redemption in this upcoming race. Elliott’s yard is also represented by Fury Road, who will be making his cross country debut.

Elliott acknowledges that both horses would prefer better ground conditions but remains optimistic about their chances. With the ultimate goal being success at Cheltenham in March, these races serve as valuable learning experiences for Galvin and Fury Road.

Latenightpass Aims to Build on Recent Success

Trained by Mouse Morris, Foxy Jacks emerged victorious in the last cross-country event at Cheltenham Festival. However, it was Latenightpass who caught the attention with a valiant second-place finish under jockey Gina Andrews.

Latenightpass, a former winner of the Aintree Foxhunters’, will carry a 3lb higher weight this time around but still holds an advantage over some higher-caliber rivals due to receiving additional weight allowance. Trainer Dan Skelton expects another strong showing from Latenightpass and believes he has what it takes to compete against tough competition.
