Uncertainty Looms Over Moeen Ali’s Fitness: Will He Join the Battle in the Ashes?

England all-rounder Moeen Ali’s Fitness Status Remains Uncertain for Second Ashes Test against Australia

In a bid to play in the second Ashes test, England all-rounder Moeen Ali has been trying hard to recover from his finger injury. The 36-year-old player came out of retirement and played in England’s two-wicket defeat game during the first Ashes Test, but unfortunately, he was hampered by a cut on his finger which affected his performance.

Despite taking two wickets in 33 overs during the first innings, he only managed to bowl 14 overs in the second inning as Australia snatched victory. However, according to team mate Ollie Pope, Moeen looks “all good” and seems fit enough to play.

“It was pretty unfortunate what happened,” said vice-captain Pope. “I think Mo is all good. Hopefully over these few days it has looked after itself and hopefully he is fit to play.”

Moeen bowled well during net practice at England practice on Monday without any apparent issues regarding his injured finger. Although it is understood that his finger has healed significantly since the Edgbaston Test finished last Tuesday; however, due consideration must be given whether it would hold up over another five-day match or not.

Ahmed Added To Squad As Cover-Up For Injured Players

Eighteen-year-old leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed has been added to England’s squad for Lord’s Test as cover-up if Joe Root or Moeen are not selected due their respective injuries.

Joe Root, who took 1-43 in 15 overs in the second innings in Birmingham, could provide the spin option alongside a four-strong pace attack that may include Mark Wood. But it all depends on Moeen’s fitness level and whether he will be selected or not.

The Role Of Spinners In Lord’s Test

When asked if England would need a spinner at Lord’s, batter Pope said: “To be honest it depends what the wicket looks like.

We know Lord’s can be bowler friendly sometimes but we have seen the role Leachy [injured spinner Jack Leach] has played over the last year in bowler-friendly conditions as well so it is a great option to have.”

    Conclusion:

Moeen Ali’s injury status remains uncertain for now, but there are options available to England. They could go with Joe Root as their only spinner or bring Rehan Ahmed into play. The decision ultimately rests upon Moeen Ali’s fitness level and how he feels before Wednesday’s match against Australia at Lord’s.
