Westover positioned for Arc bid with promising trajectory

Westover Poised for Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe Redemption

Intrigue surrounds Westover as he sets his sights on a triumphant return to ParisLongchamp, where he will once again compete in the prestigious Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe. After a lackluster performance as the beaten favorite in last year’s King George VI And Queen Elizabeth Stakes, this Irish Derby hero was determined to prove himself in the heart of France.

Despite facing unsuitably testing ground conditions, Westover admirably finished sixth and left an enduring mark. Now, under the guidance of trainer Ralph Beckett, expectations are high that this talented colt can build upon his previous showing. Following a nail-biting head-to-head battle with Hukum at Ascot showpiece, where Westover clinched second place, he arrives at ParisLongchamp at the peak of his powers.

The thriving son of Frankel has attracted attention with odds currently set at 12-1 for Arc glory. This suggests that last year’s finishing position may serve as a springboard towards greater achievements this time around.

Currently enjoying some well-deserved rest at Kimpton Down base under Beckett’s watchful eye, connections are eager to replicate last year’s successful journey to Bois de Boulogne. In addition to targeting Europe’s richest middle-distance prize on October 1st, there is speculation about a potential trip to Santa Anita after that endeavor.

“He came out of the King George great and he’s having a little break now at Ralph’s,” said Barry Mahon, European racing manager for owners Juddmonte. “He’s had two quick runs, so we’re freshening him up and we’ll aim for the Arc and hopefully it’s not heavy ground and we’ll be able to turn up there.”

Rather than following a conventional path, Beckett plans on capitalizing on Westover’s recent form by taking him directly to the Arc after his King George appearance. This strategic approach has been influenced by Westover’s busy schedule this year, including trips to Dubai and rapid subsequent races.

Although he proved himself as a Classic winner at three years old, Westover has reached new heights this season. His close pursuit of Japanese sensation Equinox in Dubai marked his reappearance in style before delivering three remarkable performances closer to home.

The talented colt secured his second Group One victory with an impressive record time in the Grand Prix de Saint-Cloud. Subsequently, he displayed immense courage when finishing second at Ascot; a testament to his growing prowess.

Mahon revealed that the team always anticipated improvement with age: “He always threatened to be [better], and he was such a big frame of a horse last year that we always felt he was going to be better this year when he strengthened… I think he’s definitely a better horse.” With high hopes pinned on favorable ground conditions, it is clear that Westover carries significant potential heading into the Arc.
