Norris Claims Pole as McLaren Upgrade Pays Off

Lando Norris will start from pole position for the first time since Las Vegas last November after delivering a decisive final lap in Q3 at the Hungaroring. The reigning world champion edged out Lewis Hamilton, who had initially topped the timesheet, as McLaren’s most substantial upgrade to the MCL40 in several races translated into immediate performance around the challenging Budapest layout. The Woking squad, winners in Hungary for the past two seasons, had entered the weekend as outsiders but now find themselves at the head of a reshuffled grid.

Hamilton was demoted three places for impeding Oscar Piastri, promoting Charles Leclerc to second alongside Norris on the front row. Piastri lines up third with Max Verstappen fourth, while Kimi Antonelli also dropped three positions for speeding under yellow flags, leaving the Mercedes driver seventh behind team-mate George Russell. The revised grid places Hamilton fifth and creates an intriguing dynamic at the front of the field.

Champion Cautious Despite Qualifying Success

Norris described McLaren’s position as “new man’s land” and stressed the need for strong tyre management, a clean start, and race-long pace to convert pole into a first victory since Brazil eight months ago. The British driver acknowledged that Mercedes and Ferrari showed impressive long-run speed on Friday, while reflecting on his own strong pace at Spa last weekend that was negated by a power-unit penalty. McLaren have managed only four podiums across the opening ten rounds of the new regulations era.

Hamilton expressed frustration on social media after collecting a third penalty in as many weekends, dropping from pole contention to fifth on the grid. The Ferrari driver remains hopeful that high tyre degradation will open strategic opportunities to recover toward the podium. Antonelli, who leads Hamilton by 45 points and Russell by 50 in the championship, insisted Mercedes will fight for victory despite the compromised starting positions as Formula 1 heads into its summer break.
