Dixon Questions Cup Race Lengths

Scott Dixon sparked debate across racing circles when the six-time IndyCar champion shared his thoughts on NASCAR Cup Series events during the weekend at Nashville Superspeedway. The series has averaged race lengths of three hours and 15 minutes this season, a figure Dixon found difficult to endure as a viewer. He remarked that he finds it really hard to watch Cup races these days, adding with a chuckle that the duration allows for a nap.

The comments ignited a wave of tribalism between fans and media members loyal to each discipline, amplified by the shared stage of Indianapolis Motor Speedway this weekend. The historic venue hosts both the Brickyard 400 and the Indianapolis 500, creating a natural intersection for drivers who have competed in both marquee events.

Kyle Larson, a veteran of the Brickyard 400 and the Indy 500, was asked to weigh in on Dixon’s assessment. Larson began by confirming his agreement that many Cup races run too long, noting the shift in how modern audiences consume sports. He stated plainly that three hours is too long for a race.

Larson dismissed any offense at the nap remark, saying it does not bother him. He reiterated his alignment with Dixon’s foundational point, emphasizing that the length of Cup events remains a valid concern regardless of which series a driver calls home.
