Spence calls time on career after Sydney defeat
Errol Spence Jr has retired from boxing following a unanimous decision loss to Tim Tszyu in Sydney, ending a career that saw him hold three major welterweight world titles. The American, now 36, entered the ring with a 28-1 record but found himself on the back foot throughout the contest, with judges scoring the bout 118-110, 117-111 and 117-111 in favour of the Australian.
Spence had been undefeated through 28 professional fights before Terence Crawford handed him a first defeat three years ago. This comeback attempt marked his first appearance since that loss, and the former WBA, WBC and IBF champion confirmed afterwards that he would not fight again. “I think yeah, for sure,” he said when asked if this was the end.
The Texan expressed contentment with his decision to walk away, citing his health and family as priorities. “I’ve got my faculties intact. My money is good at working for itself. Everything’s good, man. I’ve got a beautiful family, and I thank God I’m gracious to leave this sport with my faculties intact and my family still by my side.”
Tszyu grew in confidence and power as the fight progressed, consistently targeting Spence’s chin. The Australian now wants a world title shot of his own but acknowledged the significance of the victory. “I had sleepless nights thinking about, ‘What am I going to feel like facing a legend like that?’ But it was one hell of a show, and I understand why he’s one of the greats. I’d love to fight for a title. That’s what I’m aiming for. But I’ve got to say beating a great like Errol Spence tops a world title.”
Spence announced himself on the world stage in 2017 when he travelled to Sheffield and stopped Kell Brook at Bramall Lane to claim his first world championship. That victory launched a reign that saw him unify three belts before the Crawford defeat and now this final chapter in Australia.
