Riot Targets Rank Manipulation in VALORANT Patch 13.01
Riot Games has launched a dedicated crackdown on rank manipulation with the release of Patch 13.01, introducing a new report category and detection tools designed to protect competitive integrity. The update specifically addresses behaviors such as smurfing, win trading, and boosting that distort matchmaking and allow players to gain or lose rating without reflecting genuine performance.
The patch notes outline three escalating penalties for confirmed offenders. Accounts can face temporary suspensions with repeat or severe cases risking permanent bans, while illegitimately gained rating will be rolled back to place players at a fairer rank. Cosmetic rewards tied to ranked performance, including gun buddies and rank badges, can also be stripped if they were not earned legitimately.
Detection relies heavily on the new Rank Manipulation report type, which players must use specifically for matchmaking abuse. Long-term performance and matchmaking data feed into systems that flag accounts whose behavior deviates from normal patterns at their MMR or rank, drawing on lessons from League of Legends’ anti-boosting infrastructure. Players will receive feedback messages when action is taken against accounts they reported, similar to existing cheat report confirmations.
Guidance for Legitimate Players
Players competing seriously on their main accounts where history and MMR align with performance should remain unaffected. The system targets repeated duoing with much lower ranks, participation in boosting services, and deliberate exploitation of low lobbies. As penalties take effect, match quality should gradually improve as abusers are pushed out of the ranked ecosystem.
