Watt leaves Motherwell for Samsunspor
Elliot Watt has signed a four-year contract with Turkish Super Lig club Samsunspor after one season at Motherwell. The fee was undisclosed.
The 26-year-old midfielder joins a side that finished seventh in the Turkish top flight. That league is made up of 18 clubs.
A season that changed his career
Watt joined Motherwell last summer after leaving Burton Albion. He went on to play 42 games in all competitions.
The campaign ended with a creditable fourth place in the Scottish Premiership. Motherwell also reached the Premier Sports Cup semi-finals.
The Scotland Under-21 cap told Motherwell’s website: “I would like to take this chance to thank everyone connected to the club for the last 12 months.”
He described those 12 months as a period that changed his career and life.
He added: “The support and positivity I felt from the first minute I arrived gave me the confidence to learn, improve and perform.”
Watt said: “I hope I was able to put a smile on the fans’ faces. My family and I will be forever grateful and will always be watching; we will hopefully be back soon – I don’t think I will be able to keep my boys away from Fir Park for too long.”
Career path before Fir Park
Preston-born Watt began his career with Wolverhampton Wanderers. He later played for Carlisle United, Bradford City, Salford City, Burton and St Johnstone.
His loan spell at St Johnstone brought him to the attention of their Premiership rivals. That is how Motherwell came to sign him.
