A Final Built to Run Past Midnight
Spain and Argentina meet in the 2026 World Cup final on Sunday at 8pm UK time in New York/New Jersey, the 23rd edition of the showpiece. It will be the first final with a half-time show, rings for the winners, and could be the longest ever.
Even if extra-time and penalties are not required, the match is going to run well beyond two hours. Mandatory hydration breaks guarantee three minutes added to each half, VAR interventions could bring more stoppage time, and the first-ever half-time show will extend the interval far past the usual 15 minutes.
The show is scheduled for 11 minutes but pitch set-up and removal will add many more minutes. Gianni Infantino and President Trump are expected to hand the trophy to the winning captain close to midnight.
An American-Style Spectacle
FIFA has placed entertainment stars centre stage throughout this tournament, and the final follows with Madonna, Shakira and Justin Bieber performing in a Super Bowl-style interval. Players’ unions have raised concerns that the extended break could increase injury risk through player inactivity. FIFA says the performance supports the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund.
Winning players will receive a ring for the first time in a World Cup final, echoing the Super Bowl custom. A total of 2,026 rings will be made. Thirty are for the winners and the remaining 1,996 are available for sale.
Trump has been a key figure throughout the build-up and during this tournament, yet this will actually be the first game he has attended. He will join the trophy presentation as he did at the Club World Cup. His World Cup comments have ranged from suggesting Iran’s players should not participate to confirming he asked Infantino to let USA’s Folarin Balogun play despite a suspension and weighing in on criticism of Thomas Tuchel for his use of Harry Kane.
Political Tension Off the Pitch
Argentina have been given the green light by the White House FIFA task force to display their Falklands banner again. Andrew Giuliani, head of the task force, said: “We believe in our First Amendment rights here in the United States of America.”
FIFA’s rules ban political messaging at games, and its “independent” disciplinary committee is “considering the relevant circumstances before deciding on potential further steps” after Argentina displayed the banner following their win over England. Spain coach Luis de la Fuente has warned the referee not “to allow rules to be broken” on the back of questions about Argentina’s approach against England.
Opta’s model gives Spain a 59.6 per cent chance of success, though the contest shapes as a 50-50 game.
The Football Itself
Spain are the European champions and will field midfielders Rodri and Fabian Ruiz alongside winger Lamine Yamal. Unai Simon is set to finish the tournament with the most clean sheets in goal.
Argentina enter as reigning world champions and sit No 1 in the FIFA rankings, with Spain second. They can call on Enzo Fernandez, Julian Alvarez and Lionel Messi.
Messi, 39, prepares for his third World Cup final and is well-placed to claim the golden boot as top scorer and golden ball as best player. He won the 2022 edition and has since added two Copa Americas. Argentina seek back-to-back titles, whereas Spain could match their 2010 feat of adding a World Cup to a European crown.
As of Saturday, a few $30,000 tickets were still available for the final. On FIFA’s resale platform the most expensive listing reached $2 million.
